Anamudi Peak Munnar

Anamudi is a mountain found in Kerala, India's Ernakulam and Idukki districts. With an elevation of 2,695 meters (8,842 feet) and a topographic prominence of 2,479 meters (8,133 feet), it is the highest peak in both the Western Ghats and South India. The name Anamudi refers to the mountain's resemblance to an elephant's head and is translated as "elephant's head." The largest mountain in Kerala is Anamudi, the tallest mountain in peninsular India.

One of just three extremely noticeable summits in South India is Anamudi Peak. It is also the Indian summit with the most topographic isolation. It is India's highest point south of the Himalayas. It has earned the moniker "Everest of South India." The top, a fault-block mountain, is not very striking in terms of steepness or local relief. It is situated at the intersection of the Cardamom Hills, Anaimalai Hills, and Palani Hills in the southern part of Eravikulam National Park. Munnar is the closest town, located 13 kilometers away (8 miles). Technically simple hiking on grass slopes leading from a rolling hill plateau with a base elevation of roughly 2,000 meters (6,600 feet) is the quickest way to reach the top of Anamudi. While the east and west slopes are steeper and have more challenging rock faces, the north and south slopes are mild.

The Nilgiri tahr's greatest remaining population can be found in Anamudi and Eravikulam National Park (Nilgiritragus hylocrius). Among the animal species are Asian elephants, gaurs, Bengal tigers, and the Nilgiri marten (Martes gwatkinsii). Raorchestes resplendent, a rare frog, is also found in the Anamudi peak region. The Eravikulam National Park is home to this recently found species, confined to an area of fewer than three kilometers on the summit of Anamudi. Patches of stunted Arundinaria densifolia and Gaultheria fragrantissima (Wintergreen), Anaphalis sp., Impatiens, and a few species of Eriocaulon cover the summit of the Anamudi.
